Treatment of Mental Illnesses
Being stricken with a mental illness is nothing to be ashamed about. Every year, over 26% of Americans experience symptoms that meet the criteria of a mental illness. Mental illness represents the nation’s second leading cause of disability, surpassed only by heart disease. Mental illnesses are serious medical conditions that disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, and mood. These disruptions affect one’s daily functioning and ability to relate to others. They cannot be overcome through willpower.
Mental illness can affect persons regardless of age, race, religion or socio-economic status. Having a mental illness does not mean that a person is weak or lacks character or intelligence.
Therapy or a combination of medication and therapy, can help many people manage or overcome the symptoms of mental illness.
