Treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Cognitive/Behavioral Therapy (CBT) represents the most effective treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Medication can be appropriate in the most severe cases, but patients should consider medication carefully due to the addictive nature of some of the most commonly prescribed anti-anxiety medications. Working together, the treatment for GAD includes:
- education about GAD
- monitoring your anxiety, including the triggers, causes, and your responses
- learning physical control techniques
- learning cognitive control techniques
- implementing appropriate behaviorial interventions (i.e., time management)
