Treatment of Dysthymic Disorder
Pharmacological interventions are sometimes utilized to treat the symptoms of dysthymic disorder,
but not as frequently as in the case of other mood disorders. Medication does not work as well for Dysthymic Disorder as they do for other mood disorders. Cognitive/Behavioral Therapy (CBT) represents
the most effective treatment of Dysthymic Disorder.
Working together, we identify and challenge thoughts and beliefs (i.e., low self esteem) that cause and perpetuate the depressed mood. In addition to these cognitive interventions, behavioral interventions like sleep hygeine, diet and exercise monitoring, and journaling can relieve symptoms. We may also utilize adjunct therapies, like career counseling and Existential Therapy (exploring purpose in life).
Dysthymic Disorder is a chronic condition that lasts many years. People suffering from Dysthymic Disorder may need ongoing therapy.
