Mood Disorders
About 25% or the population will experience a mood disorder at some point in their life, with nearly 1-in-10 suffering in any given year. When you suffer from a mood disorder you may experience significant or serious impairment in your functioning at home, at work, at school, and at play. It can be difficult, if not impossible, to function as an effective parent, spouse, employee, student, or friend when you experience the symptoms of a mood disorder.
Suffering from a mood disorder represents an illness, not a weakness of character or intellect. The list of famous people suffering from mood disorders is impressive and includes Abraham Lincoln, Harrison Ford, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Robin Williams, Diana Princess of Wales, Boris Yeltsin, Drew Carey, Jim Carey, Billy Joel, and many others.
Social stressors (i.e., financial issues, marital issues, etc.), behavioral issues (i.e., anger, sexual acting out, substance abuse, etc) can often be traced to mood disorders. You may suffer from a mood disorder when dealing with a physical illnesses or the illness of a family member. Research indicates that therapy can provide significant relief from the symptoms of a mood disorder, especially cognitive/behavioral therapy. With the proper management of a mood disorder, you can live a life with little or no impairment of functioning.
