Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
People experiencing PTSD develop these symptoms that last more than one month following exposure to a traumatic stressor:
- Persistent feelings of re-experiencing the event
- Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma and numbing of general responsiveness
- Persistent symptoms of increased arousal.
Nearly half of all people seeking outpatient mental health services have PTSD. About 25% of people experiencing a traumatic stressor (i.e., physical abuse, accidents, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, etc.) develop PTSD.
