Social Phobia
A persistent fear of social or performance situations in which embarrassment may occur characterizes Social Phobia. Research suggests that up to 13% of the population will experience the symptoms of Social Phobia at some point in their lives. When experiencing Social Phobia, people:
- feel anxious when exposed to the feared social situation
- recognize that the fear is excessive or unreasonable
- avoid social or performance situations, or endure with intense distress
- notice that their symptoms interfere with their functioning
